Guided Desert Itinerary

N$48450 per person

This guided tour is different to the classic ones as it really concentrates on the deserts of Namibia and the changing landscapes and geology throughout the country. This is a tour for those looking for other worldly scenery rather than a wildlife safari. Your guide will share his knowledge of the history of Namibia and how the land has come to look as it does today. One of the highlights of the tour is of course, the second largest canyon in the world, the Fish River Canyon in the southern regions of Namibia. You will also visit both the Kalahari and Namib deserts, along with the abandoned town of Kolmanskop, the beautiful Spitzkoppe mountain, and the rugged Damaraland.

Accommodation: All comfortably luxurious lodges.
Reminder: All Namvic itineraries are tailor made to your budget and preferences. Do not hesitate to get in contact with us to modify this itinerary so that it suits you best. This is just an example of what we can do for you.

Day 1:

Your guide will be at Hosea Kutako airport arrivals to greet you. Depending on your flight times you can either go and relax at your guesthouse or have a city tour of the capital. As all tours are private feel free to discuss with your guide throughout your tour if you wish to have time to relax or stay busy with activities and exploring.

Day 2:

Your guide can take you for a quick city tour this morning if you didn’t have time yesterday, then you will travel south to the Kalahari desert. Bagatelle Game Ranch is situated in the beautiful rolling red sands of the Kalahari and is a great place to just wander around the lodge and maybe see the local family of meerkats. This evening you will join the lodge’s sundowner in an open safari vehicle to enjoy your first African sunset

Day 3:

If you wish you can add an activity to your itinerary and go for a walk this morning with the San, or Bushmen, of the Kalahari. They will show you how they hunt and survive in the desert. Your guide will then take you further south and you may see your first quiver trees as the desert landscape changes.
Lodge: Canyon Village. Basis: FB+

Day 4:

Today you will visit the famous Fish River Canyon, second largest canyon in the world. Your guide will take you to the main view point for the best view of Hell’s bend. You will then go for a walk along the top of the canyon to see the canyon from different angles and your guide will then drive you to a few other various viewpoints and explain the geology of the canyon. You are likely to spot several small creatures such as klipspringer and eagles who all call the canyon home.

Day 5:

You will leave the canyon today and travel a bit further north west. Your destination is Aus, a small town in the middle of nowhere home to the Nama people. The surrounding desert is also home to the wild horses of Aus. Your guide will take you to the best place to view them, at a small waterhole. Seeing these animals in their harsh environment and hearing how they came to be there so many years ago will certainly make you appreciate their resistance to such harsh conditions.
Lodge: Klein Aus Vista Desert Horse Inn. Basis: FB+

Day 6:

Kolmanskop will be your first stop this morning. Almost at the coast you will first notice the desert that becomes sand dunes. Kolmanskop is known as the ghost town as it once was a thriving luxurious town created by the fortunes of diamond discoverers, it was abandoned and taken over by the sand. The afternoon you will travel further north through the Namib desert and the private Namib Rand Nature Reserve with its beautiful variations of red, oranges and browns in the sand and rock.
Lodge: Desert Homestead lodge. Basis: FB+

Day 7:

This morning you will wake up extra early to head into Sossusvlei before the sun even rises. Climb to the top of Dune 45 to see the first rays light up the highest dunes in the world. Then head over to the famous trees at deadvlei, maybe climb Big Daddy then finish the morning with lunch at Sossusvlei Lodge. Relax in the afternoon by the pool and catch up on some sleep after such an early morning start

Day 8:

Make the most of a lie-in this morning, unless you wish to head back into the Namib Naukluft park for a few more photos of the dunes. Today you only have a short distance to travel which will be appreciated after the long roads of the first week. Lunch will be at the little village of Solitaire in the middle of the Namib Desert. Make sure you have a bite of their famous Apple Pie! Just a bit further on you will reach your lodge for the night. Rostock Ritz is perfectly situated with views over spectacular mountains. A drink at the restaurant this evening will be accompanied by the changing colours of the mountains as the sun sets.

Day 9:

Today your guide will take you north via the Kuiseb Canyon and Gaub pass with a quick stop at the Tropic of Capricorn for some photos. Once you arrive on the cool misty coast your guide will take you to Walvis Bay to see the flamingos before going to the quirky town of Swakopmund. This is where you will spend the night. Your guide will recommend the best restaurants for fish and seafood in the town for dinner tonight.
Lodge: Desert Breeze lodge. Basis: FB+

Day 10:

Make the most of the last few hours in Swakopmund and do a bit of souvenir shopping as this is the best place for it. Your guide will then drive you inland to the beautiful Spitzkoppe mountain. You will stop on the way to have a look at the wide range of crystals, gems and semi-precious stones at the crystal market. When you arrive at Spitzkoppe you will go on a guided activity that will take you to the bushmen’s paradise, an area with hundreds of bush paintings.
Lodge: Spitzkoppen lodge. Basis: FB+

Day 11:

Make the most of a last walk around Spitzkoppe this morning if you wish, maybe head on over to the arch or see if there is any water in the rock pools. You will then head directly north via the highest mountain in Namibia, Brandberg. Here you will enter one of our favourite regions of Namibia, Damaraland, and the home of Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A local guide will show you around this protected collection of hundreds of rock engravings and explain what they mean.
Lodge: Mowani Mountain Camp. Basis: FB+

Day 12:

This morning there is a possibility to add an additional activity and visit the Damara Living Museum where the locals explain their traditional way of living. You will then head to the beautiful Vingerklip lodge overlooking the vingerklip, a large rock standing 35m tall. The views are also stunning over the Ugab terraces. Your guide will explain how this unusual rock formation came to be.
Lodge: Vingerklip lodge. Basis: FB+

Day 13:

Prepare to stretch your legs as this next region is excellent for hiking. The Waterberg plateau has many hiking trails in the national park, some at the foot of the plateau and some going all the way up to the top. So there is something for everyone. Discuss with your guide which will be best for you. You will likely see many small creatures as the plateau is made of porous soft rock which creates many natural springs, and thus green vegetation unlike that you will have seen anywhere else in Namibia.
Lodge: Waterberg Valley lodge. Basis: FB+

Day 14:

This morning enjoy one last walk around the Waterberg. This time, in the private Waterberg Wilderness Reserve, to the end of the valley and a pretty natural water spring. You will then start heading back to Windhoek via the wooden crafts market at Okahandja. For a supplement you can add a visit to Africat, a local charity that rehabilitates cheetah in the area.

Day 15:
