Everything you need to know before your Namibia self-drive adventure.

Vehicle Hire

A valid driver's licence from your home country is sufficient. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended but not mandatory for most nationalities. Must be 21+ to rent.

Yes, all packages include standard insurance. The Bronze package has a N$25,000 excess, Silver reduces this to N$10,000 and Gold/Platinum include full cover with zero excess. Fully comprehensive insurance can be added to any package.

Off-road driving is strictly prohibited in Namibia — it causes severe environmental damage and fines can exceed N$50,000. Our vehicles are built for gravel roads, dry riverbeds, and established camps. The Skeleton Coast and certain wildlife areas require special permits.

All vehicles carry a full-size spare tyre, jack, and basic tool kit. Our 24/7 roadside assistance is included in all packages. For tyre repairs on remote roads, we'll coordinate the nearest available mechanic and arrange alternative transport if needed.

Absolutely yes. Namibia's key attractions — Sossusvlei dunes, Etosha, Damaraland, Swakopmund — are accessed via gravel roads that require 4x4. Many camps are remote with no paved access. A 2WD vehicle will get stuck and is not covered by insurance on gravel roads.

Minimum hire is 3 days. For the best Namibian experience we recommend a minimum of 7 days — Sossusvlei and Etosha alone are best done over 5–7 days. Long-term hire discounts apply for 14+ days.

Self-Drive & Routes

Namibia is one of Africa's safest countries for self-drive tourism. The roads are well-marked, traffic is light, and the people are friendly. Main risks: animals on roads at night, long distances between fuel stations in remote areas, and flash flooding on dry riverbeds (occasional). Our GPS includes marked fuel stops and emergency contacts.

Namibia has ~2,500km of tarred roads and ~40,000km of gravel roads. The main routes (Windhoek–Swakopmund, Windhoek–Sesriem) are excellent gravel. Distances are long — factor in 3–4 hours for every 200km. Speed limits: 120km/h on tar, 80km/h on gravel. Night driving is not recommended due to wildlife.

Fuel stations are available in all towns. In remote areas (Sossusvlei, Damaraland, Kaokoland), fuel may be unavailable for 200–300km stretches. Our vehicles have long-range tanks (up to 180 litres) and the GPS marks every fuel stop. Always fill up before leaving a town.

Yes, Etosha National Park entry requires a permit (N$80/day for SADC nationals, N$160/day for foreigners). These can be pre-booked online or purchased at the park gates. Our packages include park permit coordination for Gold and Platinum tiers.

Safari & Wildlife

Namibia's Big Five are all present: elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, and buffalo. Etosha is famous for elephant herds, giraffe, zebra, springbok, gemsbok, and predators. Damaraland is home to desert-adapted elephant and black rhino. The coast has seal colonies and, in season, southern right whales.

May–October (dry winter) is peak season: best game viewing as animals congregate around waterholes. November–April is the wet summer: lush green landscapes, newborn animals, lower prices, but some roads become impassable and many wildlife areas are harder to access.

Yes, Sossusvlei is Namibia's iconic red dune area inside Namib-Naukluft Park. Dune 45 (accessible) and Big Daddy (more challenging) are the most famous. The park opens at sunrise — we recommend arriving by 6am to climb before the heat. Our tours include guided sunrise dune walks.
